Breathing for anxiety
Do you want to know how to use your breath to control anxiety and calm down? By focusing your mind on your breath you are able to momentarily distract yourself from the cause of your anxiety. But most importantly, by exhaling all the old, stale CO2-rich air out of the bottom of your lungs, and inhaling new, O2-rich air, you are able to give your blood and therefore your body a boost of oxygen. This helps to bring mental clarity and focus to your task at hand, while slowing your heart rate and bringing a sense of calm to your mind. This calm, mental clarity will help you overcome the panicked feeling and let you get on with your day.
What You'll Need
- Air (it's free!)
What You'll Do
- Take a long, deeply breath in and fill your lungs, then slowly exhale as if breathing through a straw.
- Make sure to exhale for longer than you inhale.
